Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY:
To meet and deliver the database programming and analysis needs of the Sea Around Us Project. Major responsibilities include: maintaining, updating and improving the project database; writing, debugging, and documenting programs; assisting in extracting and analyzing information; consulting with project members and database users on programming and database needs; developing and implementing solutions; acting as database administrator and secondary GIS administrator; assisting as system administrator of local area network; providing backup to project web personnel; diagnosing, troubleshooting and resolving technical and database related issues; generating technical documentation; maintaining, backing up, and ensuring project database systems, content and products are preserved and operational; recommending purchases of software and hardware; making decisions and recommendations on the optimal use of computer systems and data processing applications; conducting literature searches; preparing data and graphics for publication and public display; and performing other related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
University degree in relevant discipline (Science, Marine Science or Fisheries Science preferred) with a specialization in database programming, maintenance and development. Minimum three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in large-scale database (including sqlserver) and GIS programming, maintenance, development and output. Experience in computer programming languages and debugging routines related to databases and GIS. Experience with SQL databases and servers, programming in MS Access, MS sqlserver and MS Excel, VBA, VB.net and SQL. Troubleshooting experience. Experience in web design and implementation using .NET framework an asset. Experience in and knowledge of database design, programming, analysis and application development. Knowledge of relevant database standards and frameworks. Knowledge of fisheries, marine biology and marine ecosystems an asset. Effective oral and written communication, technical writing, interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills. Ability to stay abreast of trends in database and GIS developments. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail.
